The scaled roof is used predominantly for the curved domes of churches and bell towers and requires the use of nails and/or lime. The roof is laid from the lowest point (eaves) and work proceeds upwards with slates of decreasing sizes. In addition, the individual slates must be tapered off at the top, so that they can be aligned. Naturally, covering a dome is a particularly difficult operation and requires a highly specialised workforce. The semi-circular curvature of the lower part of the slate facilitates the placement on the curved surface. |
