The traditional Genoese stud is presented in slightly different styles,  depending on the proportions required between the octagonal slate and the small marble inlay.
A traditional alternative to the “Bullettonato” is known as the chess board floor which alternates slate tiles with white Carrara marble tiles.

There are two versions of the chess board floor as the tiles can be laid parallel to the wall or on the diagonal (method known as “pissu di mandillo”).

There are several protective waxes on the market to protect these tiles, including a black wax which enhances the luminosity of the slate.
The recommended sizes of the tiles are 1-1.5 to 2 cm thick.
Thicker tiles can be  used for floors which are more resistant to weight.
