Ridges and eaves

Any  roof is naturally completed by certain characteristic elements which become an integral part of the roof itself. By the eaves, we mean, specifically, the first downward register of the slate, These are usually  bigger  and generally measure 60-70x90-100 cm. They are also thicker than other slates. These characteristics ensure a greater protection from  atmospheric agents. The other extremity of the roof is known as the ridge, the union of the two pitches which should be covered with a spine made of slate or terracotta pan tiles.

Slate pan tiles are made from blocks of varying lengths and are fixed with metal plaques and zinc nails to ensure that the holes are water tight. It is a good idea to insert a lead sheet under the pan tiles  to further guarantee that water cannot penetrate between the pitches. The pan tiles in terracotta, on the other hand, are placed  one on the other, along the ridge and fixed with lime  mortar.
