French roof with hooks
French roof with hooks
The characteristic feature of the French roof is  the square lozenge effect of the slates. This design requires  the roof to be laid using nails. There is, however, a variant of the “French” slate, which has a horizontal lower edge. This allows the roof to be laid with hooks. Starting from the lowest point (the eaves), with slates of a different dimension from the others, each one is laid so that it covers the slate underneath by a half. In this way, the finished roof is slated with a double overlay.
